Autoridades de fronteira dos Estados Unidos prenderam 210 mil migrantes que tentavam cruzar a fronteira com o México em março, maior dado mensal em duas décadas, ampliando os desafios nos próximos meses para o presidente norte-americano, Joe Biden.
O total de março representa um aumento de 24% em relação ao mesmo mês do ano anterior, quando 169 mil migrantes foram apanhados na fronteira, início de uma alta na migração que deixou milhares de crianças desacompanhadas presas por dias em estações de patrulha de fronteira enquanto aguardavam alocação em abrigos sobrecarregados.
Biden, democrata que assumiu o cargo em janeiro de 2021, prometeu reverter muitas das políticas de imigração linha-dura de seu antecessor republicano, o ex-presidente Donald Trump, mas tem enfrentado tanto operacional quanto politicamente com o alto número de tentativas de travessias.
Os republicanos, que esperam ganhar o controle do Congresso norte-americano nas eleições de meio de mandato em 8 de novembro, dizem que a reversão das políticas da era Trump por Biden encorajou mais a imigração ilegal.
Membros do governo Biden têm alertado que a migração pode aumentar ainda mais, após as autoridades sanitárias dos EUA dizerem que vão encerrar até 23 de maio uma lei sobre fronteiras durante pandemia, que permite aos requerentes de asilo e outros migrantes serem rapidamente expulsos de volta para o México para impedir a propagação da covid-19.
