O Programa Novo Rio Pinheiros já está garantindo a melhora da oxigenação e a redução da matéria orgânica nas águas, segundo dados de janeiro da Secretaria de Infraestrutura e Meio Ambiente. Dos 13 pontos de monitoramento do rio, 11 já apresentaram o chamado DBO (Demanda Bioquímica de Oxigênio) abaixo de 30 mg/l, quantidade mínima para que a água não tenha odor, melhore a turbidez e permita vida aquática.
Os pontos que registraram a melhor qualidade estão próximos às pontes Eusébio Matoso e Jaguaré, na Zona Oeste da capital paulista. Em seguida estão os trechos das pontes Cidade Universitária, Nova Morumbi e Socorro.
A melhora na qualidade das águas se deve às ações do Governo do Estado que, desde 2019, promove uma grande ação de saneamento básico para reduzir o esgoto lançado nos afluentes do Pinheiros: até agora mais de 554 mil imóveis já foram conectados à rede de esgoto, evitando que toda carga orgânica desses locais chegasse ao rio.
Paralelamente a este trabalho, já foram removidas também mais de 62.753 toneladas de lixo entre garrafas pet, bicicletas, pneus e plásticos que são jogados nas águas de diversas formas. Ainda há o trabalho de desassoreamento que já removeu mais 687.456 m3 de sedimentos do fundo do rio.
