O papa Francisco visitou uma prisão italiana para uma missa nesta Quinta-feira Santa (14), onde lavou e beijou os pés de 12 detentos para relembrar o gesto de humildade de Jesus para com seus apóstolos na noite anterior à sua morte.
Os predecessores de Francisco realizaram o ato na Basílica de São Pedro ou em outra catedral de Roma. Mas depois de sua eleição em 2013, o papa Francisco deu continuidade à tradição que estabeleceu como arcebispo de Buenos Aires de mantê-lo em prisões ou lares para idosos.
Este ano, Francisco foi a uma prisão na cidade portuária de Civitavecchia, a noroeste de Roma, na costa do Mediterrâneo.
Um vídeo divulgado pelo Vaticano mostrou o papa lavando e beijando os pés de 12 detentos de várias idades, incluindo uma mulher que parecia ser idosa.
“Nós, sacerdotes, devemos ser os primeiros a servir os outros, não explorar os outros”, disse ele aos presos em uma breve homilia improvisada durante a missa na capela da prisão. “É uma maneira de dizer ‘não julgo ninguém. Tento servir a todos'”, afirmou.
O papa lhes disse que Deus os julgaria, mas também estaria pronto para perdoá-los.
Nos últimos dois anos, versões reduzidas do ato foram realizadas dentro do Vaticano por causa das restrições da Covid.
A visita ao presídio, que foi privada e fechada ao público, foi o segundo de dois cultos desta quinta-feira, início de três dias de intensas atividades até a Páscoa.
